Wine coloured commercially manufactured quilted dressing gown with belt, machine quilted in a floral and meandering design with machine chain stitch. Fastens with 8 buttons and a metal press stud at the neckline, and has two pockets. The original label is still intact at the neck and reads ‘A Cosy - Quilt Gown’. The dressing gown is a size 38.
The exact origins of the 'Cosy' manufacturers is unknown, but it is possible that they were part of the 'Comfy' quilt brand which was produced by the British Quilting Company. The machine quilted chain stitch was done on a Cornley Machine, which had a hook instead of a needle to imitate tambour work. The Cornley Machine had a rotary handle which allowed stitching in all directions. This meant that the garment itself did not need to be turned, making it much easier to produce the meandering floral pattern which can be seen on this garment.
The Quilters' Guild Collection is held by The Quilters’ Guild of the British Isles.
