This piece was directly inspired by a Victorian Log cabin table cover in The Quilters’ Guild Collection. It follows the diagonal stripes of the ‘Straight Furrow’ log cabin arrangement, yet manages to achieve the same overall effect without employing the log cabin block. The central strips have been applied to a foundation backing and left free to fray at the edges –which adds a wonderful textured dimension. The artist produced many samples and experiments with this piece to ensure it was achieving the right level of diagonal design without becoming too overpowering. The decision to hand quilt the border in large stitches came from the idea of tacking quilts, and the overall result creates raised ridges across the diagonal pieces in the opposite direction – creating the ‘cross-hatch’ of the title.
The Quilters' Guild Collection is held by The Quilters’ Guild of the British Isles.
