This beautiful and decorative linen stomacher has been intricately created from corded quilting, and uses tiny backstitches to make the parallel channels for the fine cord to be inserted. The floral design has been further enhanced by a combination of different embroidery stitches, French knots and pulled work within the flowers and leaves. The back of the stomacher is made from a coarser linen. There is a small label attached to the bottom of the stomacher that reads ‘Miss Margaret Johnson 14st. 10th st.’
This is a rare piece, as not many quilted stomachers survive. Quilted stomachers have often been cut down from items with a previous use, but this one has been designed and made to fit this specific shape.
