Printed Cottons Hexagon coverlet, paper pieced and hand sewn with a turn back allowance along one edge (double sided for this section only, otherwise just a single layer). The hexagons have been fussy cut and include many early printed cottons from the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Fabrics and colours have been arranged into larger hexagonal shapes, with hexagons of the same fabric radiating out from the centre.
This coverlet has been very carefully designed and constructed from fine cotton prints, and, according to the family history, is thought to have been made by the great great grandparents of the coverlet's donor, Thomas and Rebecca Bewley (nee Hogg). The family originated from near Dublin, Ireland and had a strong Quaker tradition. Their son, William Henry Bewley was a merchant and sugar refiner, and owned a small country house called 'Rockville', outside Dublin.
