This interesting coverlet is one of the few items in the collection made by children, and combines a range of sewing techniques including patchwork, appliqué and cross stitched text. The central appliqué motifs include various animals, butterflies, people and stars which have been cut from floral and striped cotton fabrics. The uniform rectangles and repeat designs in different colour ways of printed cottons that form the outer frames suggest pieces from a sample book.
The cross stitched text in alternate plain borders are taken from various bibilical sources, and read: “Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now have I kept thy word. Whomever the Lord loveth he chasteneth. God is Love. St. John IV. Be though faithful unto death and I will give thee a crown of life. Rev. II 10. After my skin worms destroy this body. Yet in my flesh I shall see God. Job XIX. All things whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer. Believing ye shall receive. Pray one for another”. A label sewn onto the front of the last frame reads 'Cam Blue Coat School 1874'.
