This diamond, star and crazy coverlet was made from silks and velvets by Frances Maria Fletcher (nee Cope) whilst she lived on Shottle House farm in Belper, Derbyshire. It is likely it was made before her wedding in 1873, and that the silks and velvets came from her sister who worked as a buyer for a London fashion house. Unlike her sister, Frances and her remaining siblings would not have had access to such fine fabrics, and they were only allowed one new dress per year made from more practical, dull fabrics.
