Printed and plain cotton patchwork coverlet with star block design, with matching valance. The coverlet is hand stitched and the cotton fabrics were purchased from local market stalls. It was made by Joan Irving during the 1970s, when she was a consultant radiologist working in Lewisham. Joan discovered her love of sewing when she was in India as a child. Her father was an officer in The British Army. Joan was sent to The Hills to have a long course of anti-rabies injections and was here she was taught to sew
