Coverlet made from 100 blocks of pink and purple printed cotton log cabin blocks, set in a 'Sunshine and Shadow' layout design. The blocks are surrounded by a border of printed cotton triangles alternating with four strips of pink cotton. The blocks have been pieced by machine, and linen tape covers the seams on the reverse of the coverlet.
This coverlet is one of four items in the collection which was made by one or more of the Watson sisters (See the Kaleidoscope Quilt made by Elizabeth Watson). The three Watson sisters, Elizabeth, Annie and Sara-Jane lived on a large farm in Cumbria, and this coverlet is an example of one of their more practical and ultilitarian items. The women rose at 5am every morning to start their farm chores. As there was no electricity on the farm, they did their sewing in daylight hours between 1 and 3 pm, continuing their chores again afterwards.
