Patchwork coverlet made from triangles and squares of glazed furnishing fabrics in strong colours. The furnishing prints include floral motifs on yellow, red, blue and brown grounds, and some include figures (male hunter in red coat and top hat), ‘Chinoiserie’ style buildings or birds. The ribbons are all striped or checked with gradients of colours. The glazed finish is still intact on all of the furnishing prints. The coverlet is backed with plain calico and a simple chevron quilting design with a naive central heart motif holds the two pieces together.
This coverlet has been passed down through the family of the donor who believes it was made locally and presented to the landlady of the Rose and Crown pub at Ainsty, Warks, by a lady whose husband had run up a large drinking bill, as payment in kind.
