This coverlet has a diamond shape design made up from hexagons in silks and velvets. The hexagons were pieced over papers and then hand sewn together to produce this visually striking design.
Piecing over papers is the commonest construction technique in Britain for creating patchwork hexagons. Fabric is wrapped over a paper template, the turnings are tacked, and then the hexagon units are oversewn together by hand. The tacking and paper templates are then removed, although sometimes these papers remain. These paper templates, often recycled from letters, books and newspapers, can provide clues to the date of construction and the life of the maker.
