This coverlet was made by the Church Women’s Missionary Association of St Ninians Episopcal church in Perth. The coverlet is made from various different designs of printed cotton hexagons which have been hand pieced together and then machine sewn onto the backing fabric. The stitching of each floret varies, showing this is definitely a group piece.
During WW2 fabrics were scarce and the group’s usual overseas missionary activity couldn’t continue. However, patchwork was suggested as a way of keeping the group going, and the hexagons were made out of scraps of material the women in the association had at home. Due to shortages, they had to wait for a suitable backing piece. This was unavailable until some excess triangular red cross bandages were being sold off, which were promptly bought and pieced together for the backing, and the initials were then stitched in the centre. As you can see, the backing is made up of the joined triangle bandages.
