Maker:
Wharton, John
Date:
1900

Octagons and squares patchwork quilt made from different coloured and patterned printed cottons, hand pieced over papers and hand sewn together. It was made by John Wharton, a farmer from Orton, Westmorland. Mr Wharton was unable to work for many years due to poor health, and so quilting kept him occupied. The fabric used in this piece was mainly taken from remnants of family clothing, and the wadding is also probably pieces of old clothes sewn together.
