Mauve 'Staithes' bonnet made from printed cotton with decorative ruffle across the crown and corded quilting along the brim. The bonnet has two ties made from the same fabric.
The original information supplied by the donor said that this bonnet was used on the Kennet and Avon Canal, although the style is very distinctive to the 'Staithes' bonnet, which was worn by fisherman's wives along the North Yorkshire Coast. The design is intended to provide padding to cushion the weight of heavy baskets which would be carried on the head.
Width 43.5cm
