Heritage Open Days: The World on our Doorstep: International influences within our British Patchwork and Quilting Heritage

  • North American Seminole Doll
  • Turkey Red Sawtooth Frame Quilt, c.1900-1910
  • Heritage Open Days

This exhibition explores a selection of textiles from The Quilt Collection, that originate from, or feature design influences from other parts of the world. Whilst The Quilt Collection itself tells the story and development of our British patchwork and quilting heritage, there are many aspects of fabric design, dyeing techniques and construction styles which have international roots - influencing British design, manufacture and making.

Whether it's the well travelled recipe of the Turkey Red dyeing technique; the souvenir tourist examples of Turkish corded quilting; the Chinese inspired ‘Chinoiserie’ printed fabrics or the Paisley motif’s adaptation from a traditional Indian design - our 'British' collection has wider networks and connections then we realise. This exhibition explores some of those connections, showing the impact and exchange of ideas between our British focussed collection and the wider design and crafting world.

Please note we are not open Sundays.
