Averil Colby was one the most influential quiltmakers of her day. Not only did she produce beautiful pieces of patchwork, often using hexagon pieces arranged in floral wreaths and clusters, she was instrumental in researching the history of patchwork and quilting which was previously unexplored. Averil started her first book, Patchwork (1958) when she was 58. She was a meticulous worker, and the popularity of her book led to four further publications: Samplers (1964), Patchwork Quilts (1965), Quilting (1971) and Pincushions (1975). All but the last of these titles are available to look at in the Guild library, which holds an extensive number of titles on Patchwork, Quilting and Appliqué.
These books are available to browse in the Guild Library and will be available for loan to Guild Members after the exhibition. For the full list of titles in the Guild Library, click here.
