Quilters from Australian and New Zealand visited the ‘Inspired by the Past’ and ‘Breakthrough’ exhibitions at the Quilt Museum on the 9th of April. After their behind the scenes visit with our Curator Heather Audin and a look around the galleries, they enjoyed an afternoon tea with local quilters. Each quilter from the visiting group brought along photos to share of their quilts back home, as well as a ‘travel quilt’ which was a small project they were currently working on during their trip. One quilter from New Zealand generously brought a gift of native fabrics to share with the quilters of York.
One by one, each woman brought out stunning pieces to share with the rest of the group. The quilts represented a wide spectrum of techniques from traditional hexagons to sun-dyed fabrics. Each quilter shared the stories behind the making of her quilt. One common theme was that trips abroad inspired the designs of several quilters. The visit was a success which highlighted the connections not only between historic and contemporary quilts, but also celebrated the similarities between quilting in different parts of the world.
The local quilters who hosted the ‘show and tell’ session are members of the White Rose and Priory Patchworkers quilting groups which meet regularly in York and Elvington. If you would like more information about joining these groups or to book a group visit to the Quilt Museum, please ring us at 01904613242 or email info@quiltmuseum.org.uk.
