This quarter the museum has been fortunate to gain several more donations into the museum collections. The vibrant and colourful furnishing fabrics quilt was made in the Farne Islands in the late Victorian period, by a family whose father worked in a lighthouse. The donors, who are grandchildren of the maker of the quilt, recalled how their grandparents would often have to sail across to the mainland for food and supplies in all weathers.
In contrast the Clothes Label Coverlet was finished in the 1980s, and is made from over 2000 clothes labels saved up by the maker and her friends and family over a couple of decades. There are plenty of interesting brands and names, and it was thought that visitors (and staff!) would enjoy trying to find the labels they recognise or remember from items they have owned in the past. As always, we are grateful for all donations to the Quilt Museum and Gallery collection, and we look forward to displaying these new items in future exhibitions.
